Location of the Battle of Port Republic
The battle of Port Republic, the last of General Stonewall
Jackson's Valley Campaign, was fought on June 9, 1862. The battlefield
lies one and one-half miles downriver from the village of Port
Republic. The APCWS
(Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites) has established a
short interpretive trail with signage at the "coaling" which overlooks
the battlefield. The coaling was the site of the placement of Federal
guns; some of the fiercest fighting of the war took place in an effort
to gain or keep control of these guns.
